Photos of a Fun Week
Dear Mom & Dad,
Even though this was a short week, we had such a fun time.
On Monday, we read our book, The 7 Habits of Happy Kids and talked about being proactive. Ask me what it means to be proactive and how I try to be proactive every day!

We also went to the 2nd grader's Living Museum where we got to hear about different famous Americans. Asked me what I learned!
We also talked about easier, faster ways to count then by 1's. We took off one shoe and made a big pile. Then we brainstormed all the different ways we could group the shoes to count them quickly: by 2's, by 5's, and by 10's. Then, we took off BOTH shoes and made an even bigger pile! Wow! We were glad we brainstormed different ways to count then by 1's because it would have taken us FOREVER!
We did a Science experiment where we tried to make a cloud in a bottle.
Here is the first attempt:
Here is the next attempt when we got a cloud!
On Tuesday, we had our Literacy Day celebration! Here are some photos and a few videos of the big event! We had such a great time!!

My Week...
Dear Mom & Dad,
It's the last full week before the holiday break! Next week, we will only have school on Monday and Tuesday. On Tuesday, we will have our Literacy Day celebration all day! We will also not be getting homework next week.
We got to meet with our 3rd grade buddies from Mrs. Corl's class. We had fun making "super" reading bracelts to wear on Tuesday.
This week we learned all about fairy tales. We read Jack and the Giant and completed a story map for our fairy tale. We learned words like: villain, hero, magical objects, climax, and resolution.
We also read two different Cinderella stories. Then, we made a Venn Diagram to compare the different story elements and see how our two fairy tales were the same and how they were different. This helped us to make our own fairy tales. We started working our our fairy tale plan and then our drafts. Thank you to Mrs. Rose and Mr. and Mrs. Licht for helping us to edit our stories and work through the writing process. When we publish our fairy tales, we will copy them onto scrolls and then design and create castles to hold our finished scrolls. What a fun writing project!

In Social Studies, we looked more closely at world maps and the map of the United States of America.
Then, we compared the two maps using a Venn Diagram.
We noticed that on our world map, there were 7 large bodies of land called continents. We even learned a little song to help us remember the names of the 7 continents. Here is how it goes:
We had to become experts at maps because we read Flat Stanley this week and created our very own flat people. We brainstormed where we could send our flat people.

We can't wait to send our flat people out and hear back about their adventures. We will be mapping all of our flat people's adventures and keeping track of all of the places they visit using our maps.
In Math, we moved on from object, shape, and color patterns to number patterns. We have been working really hard on studying our 100's chart and finding all sorts of number patterns on it! Ask me all the patterns that I noticed! We completed 100 chart puzzles where we had to fill in the missing pattern. We saw missing 5's, 10's, even numbers, and odd numbers. I have also been working on skip counting by 10's, 5's, and 2's all the way to 100. What a great mathematician I am becoming!
In Science, we have been studying the sky and all of the natural things found in the sky during the day and during the night. We also studied day and night and what makes each one each. This week, we started our science project. We created a mobile (all by ourselves) and labeled which side was night and which side was day. Then we made things for each of the skies, us doing one thing during the day and one thing at night, and then wrote about what we felt, heard, and saw during each time. We are going to to hang our mobiles over our tables for use to admire throughout the year.
We have been talking about being good citizens and good leaders too. Each Monday, we are going to set a goal, any goal, that we want to work on and meet during the week. We write that goal and stick it to our tables. We have to remind ourselves of our goals in order to work for them, otherwise they are just a wish. We also created a mission statement for our Tiger Team so we can remind ourselves how we are leaders each day both inside and outside the classroom.
On Thursday, we had our special luncheon. Thank you for coming out to eat with me and share a special time with me. I always enjoy when you visit me at school.
Next week is a short week, but we will be there bright and early on Monday!

A Chilly Week of Fall
Dear Mom & Dad,
Wow! The weather has sure started to feel like fall! I've had to even bring my jacket to school. Please help me to remember to label my jacket, gloves, hats, etc. with my name incase I misplace it somewhere during the school day.
This week we have been reading lots of stories with problems and solutions. We have been talking about the characters and settings of each story as well. Mrs. Maggart even showed us how to can write stories with problems and solutions just like these:

We also wrote a found poem. What is a found poem? Well, it's a poem that you write about a story or book using words and phrases that you like from that story or book. It also follows the same sequence, or is in the same order, as the story itself. We read The Ugly Pumpkin and created our own found poem as a class. We each added something, we read a part, and we even "graded" ourselves on how well we participated in this project.

In Science we studied the wind. We can't see wind but we can observe, or see, things that proves there is wind. We learned the vocabluary words, "wind," "windy," and we learned all about the special tool used to measure wind, a windsock. We made our own windsocks and then took them outside to measure the wind. It was a super windy day and it began to rain on us so we didn't get to observe for long.
We also made pinwheels, another object we can use to see or measure wind.
We also read some pretty good non-fiction books filled with facts about wind. Ask me what I learned from this book!
We are still collecting food to help fight hunger. Our Tiger Team goal is 100 things of food. Let's keep bringing in canned food and other non-perishable items to make that goal!
Next week is an early release day on Wednesday and we have a Veteran's Day assembly on Thursday at 8:00 am in the cafeteria.
