This week was Teacher Appreciation Week at TvE. Mrs. Maggart was completely overwhelmed this week by all of the amazing gestures, gifts, and sweet notes she received. She cannot thank everyone enough for making her feel so appreciated. Our Tiger Team families are simply amazing!

To prepare for our Masterpiece Material Celebration on Wednesday, we worked very hard putting the finishing touches on our portfolios. It was so fun looking at all of the different work we have done this first grade year and getting to compare our work now to our work at the beginning of first grade. We have come so far! We were excited to talk about how different first grade has been from kindergarten and to set goals for our next adventure...second grade!
We had a few kindergartners visit our classroom one morning and we asked them to help us practice presenting our portfolios so that we were all ready for the big day! We had a checklist to help us remember the things we had brainstormed that we wanted to accomplish at our Masterpiece Material Celebration on Wednesday and we had it handy so we wouldn't forget.
On the day of our celebration, we were so excited to show off our work and present our portfolios. Everyone did such a great job and Mrs. Maggart was so proud of everyone. Thank you to all of the parents and families who were able to make it. We realize how busy everyone is and we appreciated you taking time out of your days to celebrate with us.

This week, one of our reading groups was ready to present their play, The Three Little Pigs, that they had been working on all of last week. They had picked characters, rehearsed everyday, designed their setting, or background, and created hats for each of their characters. We were so excited to see their final production! Great job guys!
In Math, our learning goal this week was to learn all about weight and capacity. We read a few books for mathematicians to help us understand what capacity and weight measured and how important these measurements our to our daily lives.

We talked about how we can sometimes guess, or predict, which objects have a greater weight and/or capacity by simply looking at them.
But, a good mathematician always double-checks so we got busy and used scales and balances to compare the weights of different objects. We used measuring cups and beans and rice to compare the capacity of different of containers, containers that we use everyday at home and at school. We recorded all of our results and discussed our results.
| Recording our results |
On Friday, we had a big debate about the capacity of 2 sets of containers that we measured. Half of the class thought one container had the greatest capacity and the other half thought the OTHER container did. There is only one way to settle this...we agreed we will measure again next week and discuss our results. We brainstormed all of the ways we could have gotten different measurements and how we could fix this. We are such great problem solvers!
In Science, we are learning more about animal groups and what these animals have, can do, and what they are. We have read about mammals, birds, and amphibians, and recorded the different characteristics of these animals in our Science Notebooks. We are learning so much!

On Friday, after a long week of working hard on portfolios and reflections, we had some fun with a writing project! Since we are beginning our animal unit in Science, Mrs. Maggart found a book about an animal and a competition it has against an object. It was such a funny book!

It gave us a great idea...why didn't we write a story about an animal versus an object?! We helped Mrs. Maggart write a piece about her cat, Harley, verses a flashlight.
We had some great ideas and we were so excited to go back and write our own pieces. We know a lot about animals! This is good since we will begin our independent research next week and then publish a nonfiction text!
What a great week!
Love,
Tiger Team
